In case of Emergency…

by Derek on Aug.27, 2008, under food, random

Just came across this via an email from Costco.  Ah the epitome of warehouse shopping, this HAS to be the ultimate item from there – an Emergency Food Supply.  Who knew? Wonder how many of these they actually sell….doesn’t seem like a bad deal for $75 – probably tastes like…yeah, let’s not go there.  At least it matches with the buckets of industrial swimming pool cleaner out there.

Anyone wanna try? We are supposed to be due for an earthquake right? the BIG ONE? Thiswould probably come in handy…

As found in it’s description:

Basic preparation will impact the probability of your family’s survival in an emergency. Delicious and Easy to Prepare. Each bucket contains 275 servings of Pre-mixed and Pre-seasoned 100 % Vegetarian and Vitamin Fortified food for you and your family. With a 20 year long shelf life, this kit is perfect for the preparation of natural disasters such as hurricane, tornado, earthquakes or even a camping/hunting trip.

  • Easy to prepare
  • 275 servings
  • Sealed in convenient Weather-Proof Bucket for Easy Transport

Wine and DineLA 2008

by Derek on Aug.14, 2008, under food

I don’t usually post things like this, but looks like Wine and DineLA is coming up and I always do enjoy going to all the fancy restaurants.  If you’ve never done DineLA before, it’s basically a few weeks when a lot of nicer restaurants prepare a prix-fixe menu and offer it with a wine pairing (if so desired) for a price that is lower than what you would normally pay to have it at that restaurant.  It’s a good time to go and try different things from places you have been wanting to try, or just to get a good deal on some food.  Note that when I say good deal, I’m not talking about $20 bucks here, I’m talking about 50-100 for food alone per person.  I will definitely have to do some research and choose some of these restaurants.  Check out the list, or make a reservation via OpenTable.

ghetto dogs

by Derek on Jun.30, 2008, under food, random, work

So I was thinking the other day about how I haven’t gone out to a club or bar in a while that wasn’t on the Westside, and in that thinking came about the ideas of how I really don’t mind missing out on the Hollywood/Downtown scene that much, except for one thing…the infamous Los Angeles ghetto-dog.  Yes, you know the ones of which I speak – the hot dog wrapped in bacon, covered in grilled onions/peppers and slathered in mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and hot sauce (if so desired).  It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to indulge in one of those, but it got me thinking.  A while back I was reading about how there was a crackdown on the downtown vendors because of the unsanitary (READ: unsanitary to county health codes) preparation methods, and storage of the meat, and how it was harder to locate these stands, but I recall the last time I went out I was STILL able to find these on every corner.  So are people REALLY missing out on these? And how many people actually care about the lack of “proper” refrigeration and cooking?

So, I’ve decided to poll – let’s see what people think.  Mmmm… doesn’t that picture just make you want one right now?

Do you enjoy the famed, Los Angeles street dogs?
