ghetto dogs

So I was thinking the other day about how I haven’t gone out to a club or bar in a while that wasn’t on the Westside, and in that thinking came about the ideas of how I really don’t mind missing out on the Hollywood/Downtown scene that much, except for one thing…the infamous Los Angeles ghetto-dog. Yes, you know the ones of which I speak – the hot dog wrapped in bacon, covered in grilled onions/peppers and slathered in mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and hot sauce (if so desired). It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to indulge in one of those, but it got me thinking. A while back I was reading about how there was a crackdown on the downtown vendors because of the unsanitary (READ: unsanitary to county health codes) preparation methods, and storage of the meat, and how it was harder to locate these stands, but I recall the last time I went out I was STILL able to find these on every corner. So are people REALLY missing out on these? And how many people actually care about the lack of “proper” refrigeration and cooking?

So, I’ve decided to poll – let’s see what people think. Mmmm… doesn’t that picture just make you want one right now?
robo puppy, wave of the future

I love dogs. I have one, and I’m glad he’s a healthy little guy, but in the case that anything ever happened to him, I have to take up inspiration from this little pup.
That’s right – Hope was born without legs, and is being fitted for some prosthetics! The end result:
Crazy huh? Well, here’s hoping this little puppy has a good, long life with her wheels. Although I can’t help but think that those first steps probably looked something like this:

Buns and Guns

In our day and age, it seems like a great way to attract customers is via themes that people want to see. Take the case of Disney. Disneyworld’s Epcot Center, located in Florida is the epitome of themes. Circle around the main lagoon and you’ve just traveled the world, being in intricate sets of countries all steps away from each other. Want bratwurst, fried rice, a croque-monsieur, and some kabobs? No problem! Disney’s got you covered.
For those of you a little more adventurous, comes news of the newest theme restaurant, simply called “Buns and Guns – A Sandwich Can Kill you”. Yes, that’s right, this is a TERRORIST themed restaurant in Beirut, Lebanon – one of the most war-torn cities of the last few decades. Want a rocket-propelled grenade? Unfortunately for you if you ARE a terrorist you’re not actually getting one, but just chicken on a skewer. What would possess someone to create such a restaurant? And if you were visiting Beirut, would you drop in to grab a B52 here? I guess only time will tell if this tactic will be successful, but at what point is a theme just completely distasteful? I guess I could think of a few things that would be more offensive, but if this works, more power to the owner! Just showing that no idea is too ridiculous when it comes to business.
BMW M3 or Toyota Prius
by Derek on Jun.23, 2008, under technology, video
Following up with the post on the SmartCar vending machine comes this clip from one of our favorite shows, Top Gear from the BBC (the NBC version is coming later this year!). In it, they run a Toyota Prius versus a BMW M3 around a track 10 times to figure out which was more economical. Turns out, the Prius is not. The BMW averaged around 2 more miles per gallon than the Toyota Hybrid. As it stands with gas prices quickly rising, the sales of Prius’ are ever increasing and it’s getting harder to find one on lot for MSRP. Wonder how those sales would change if there were a report that went out showing that the Prius is only REALLY more economical if you’re driving local and in stop and go traffic all day long, and that the costs that you pay in premium for a hybrid vehicle are not recouped for years in gas savings (although probably less that nowadays). The Prius is still more GREEN however, and therefore will be the choice vehicle for people like Leonardo di Caprio – at least until the Chevy VOLT comes to the market…for me, I’d rather take the V8 M3, I’d be getting better mileage than those hybrids on the freeway!

Something Store

So there was an interesting post a while back about SomethingStore.com. Somethingstore.com is this site where you can buy something, pay via Google check-out, and have it delivered to you within a few weeks. The catch is, you have absolutely no idea what you’re getting. In essence, it’s Christmas for yourself any day you’d like. Sounds ridiculous right? Well, actually going to the site and viewing what other people have received is a very interesting experience. You’ll see that there is a wide variety of items that people have bought, some of the things worth far greater than the ten dollars they paid (eg. ipods, video games, gift cards) but other things are worth far less and are things you’d more often see on the shelves of bad gift shops or the clearance sections at wal-mart and target.
Needless to say, I was too curious to let this one go – after all, I am an avid Woot! watcher and have missed every possible opportunity to buy one of their coveted “Bags of Crap” (of which have resulted in Woot!’ers receiving a myriad of expensive electronic equipment, as well as well, pretty much the equivalent of crap), so me and trex both decided to try it and see what came.
A few weeks went by and finally my package arrived. As I opened it in anticipation, and pulled it out of the packaging it had the potential to be a great prize. But like a kid who got coal on Christmas, it was a disappointment. Low and behold, this is what somethingstore.com sent me:
Apologies for the bad resolution, another cell-phone pick, but it’s a 3in1 Charger for an iPod, made by iBoost International (no rip-off of the Apple “i” there huh?). Quick search on ebay and how much was it worth? No more than $5, with an additional $5 shipping, and no bids. So it is worthless! No one wants them, and even the sellers trying to unload for under $2 up the shipping to cover the costs taken by ebay and the payment provider. Oh well, at least it was a surprise and something I guess.
What did trex get? Well, that’s another story altogether, and I’ll leave it up to him to comment or post on that funny incident
Anyone have an extra $20K? I want to buy a car.
by Derek on Jun.19, 2008, under Uncategorized
There are some pretty bad marketing tactics out there. It’s always refreshing to see some innovation and forward-thinking that really catches consumers and creates a memorable message. As seen above, Smart Car is the latest in these forward thinkers, creating a faux-vending machine in Japan that dispenses tubes that contain information on their vehicles. Have you ever seen anything so cool? Especially with gas prices approaching $5 a gallon these days, maybe Smart Car should try placing a few of these at hot spot malls this summer here in the States. Would probably make a bigger impact than their Smart Car House that supposedly showcases how a “Smart” individual lives. I know this – if I saw one of these, I’d take a tube and definitely look through the information – if a company is willing to engage its potential customers through fresh and exciting ways, I’m willing to give them a few more minutes of my time. One of these beats seeing 100 banners and posters pasted all over the city
